Bringing Elland Road into the Digital Age: How Survey Hub Delivered Precision with Laser Scanning
At Survey Hub, we’re passionate about delivering surveys that embrace complexity, whilst maintaining the highest standards of accuracy and efficiency. As a full-service provider of property, land and compliance surveys, we specialise in everything from topographical and measured building surveys to 3D laser scanning, Revit modelling and utility investigations.
When the opportunity came to undertake the large-scale project at Leeds United Football Club’s historic venue; Elland Road, we knew we needed technology and expertise to match the scale and complexity. After careful consideration, our measured survey team utilised our newest kit purchase, the Riegl VZ-600i scanner to meet these needs.
A Major Project with Major Demands
The scope of the project: capture the interior and exterior of all stands, across a busy football venue, on a schedule that allowed for minimal disruption to the club’s operations. Efficiency and accuracy were non-negotiable.

Applying Our Trusted Workflow
We began by establishing a robust control network across the site during the topographical survey phase – a process familiar to our team, given our breadth of work in land and building surveys. We then leveraged the same control framework for our laser scan capture.
In total, we completed 5,250 scan positions, with all data registered and refined using Riegl’s RiSCAN PRO software – a new platform for us, but one backed by strong support from Riegl’s team when issues inevitably arose.
Integration Across Technologies
To deliver rich, usable data for the client, we integrated:
· Riegl laser-scan data
· Walkthrough imagery and data capture via our NavVis VLX system
· Drone-derived point cloud data
This layered approach gave maximum flexibility for future modelling, visualisation and as-built reference.
Riegl staff were responsive and proactive in assisting our integration with third-party data; testimony to the quality of support we look for in a technology partner.
Why It Worked
· Experience and Survey expertise: From measured building surveys through to topographical and utility surveys, our team had the experience to manage all phases seamlessly. One-stop-shop approach: We coordinate multiple survey disciplines in-house, simplifying logistics, ensuring standards and streamlining delivery.
· The right tech: Riegl’s VZ-600i and RiSCAN PRO gave us the speed, accuracy and flexibility needed for a complex environment.
· Strong support: When tech or integration issues arose, the vendor support helped keep us on schedule and avoid bottlenecks.
· Data integration: By combining laser scan, walkthrough imagery and drone capture, we delivered a powerful dataset for the client’s future use – not just a static survey.
Results and Client Value
The outcome? A fully captured stadium site, both internally and externally, with a high-quality deliverable in the form of a 3D Revit model, utilising our in-house technicians to complete and hand over to the client for use on future redevelopment work. The data set now provides the client with a reliable, measurable foundation.
At Survey Hub, we are proud to have successfully completed this large-scale survey using cutting-edge technology and our trusted process. This project underlines what we deliver every day: a combination of technical excellence, integrated service, delivery and customer-first responsiveness.
